What Makes This Korean Egg Toast So Addictive?
Mayak toast 마약토스트 is a combination of the Korean word mayak (마약), meaning “drug,” and “toast.” In this context, “mayak” doesn’t refer to actual drugs; it’s a slang term used to describe food that’s so delicious it’s addictive. The name implies that the toast is so tasty that you won’t be able to stop eating it!
The K toast I’m sharing today is especially addictive, thanks to the creamy richness of the egg and mayonnaise paired with a hint of sweetness. Once you try it, you’ll understand why it’s called “Mayak Toast”!

How to Make
Today, all you need is a slice of bread, mayonnaise, an egg, and a little sugar.
That’s it.
- Spread mayonnaise on the bread, sprinkle some sugar, and crack an egg right on top.
- Then pop it into an oven, air fryer, or microwave—whichever you have at home.
- Just one thing! If you’re using a microwave, make sure to gently poke the egg yolk with a fork before cooking. Otherwise, the yolk might explode while heating.
No need to turn on the stove. Sounds easy, right? Don’t you want to try it already?

Healthy Light Korean Toast Recipe
Worried about all that mayo and sugar? Here’s a healthier version of Korean toast with eggs you can try.
- Use whole grain bread to lower the glycemic index.
- Replace the sugar with a sugar substitute, such as stevia, or use honey for a more wholesome touch.
Enjoy the addictive flavor in a lighter, guilt-free way!

Mayak Korean Food
In Korea, the word mayak, which literally means “drug,” is often used in the names of highly addictive dishes. Don’t worry—there’s nothing illegal about it! It’s just a playful way of saying that the food is so delicious that it’s addictive. Let’s take a look at 3 famous Mayak Korean dishes besides mayak toast.
Mayak Eggs (Mayak Gyeran)
Surprisingly, Korean Mayak Eggs have become more popular abroad than in Korea. The original Korean dish, gyeran-jang, involves fully cooking eggs in soy sauce. In contrast, Mayak eggs typically use soft-boiled eggs that are soaked in a soy-based marinade.

Personally, I prefer the original gyeran-jang version. Why? Because I don’t have the patience to wait a whole day for the eggs to marinate! Maybe it’s my ppali ppali (“hurry hurry”) Korean mindset, haha.
Mayak Kimbap
Mayak kimbap is one of the most iconic foods sold at Gwangjang Market in Seoul. It’s a small, bite-sized version of traditional kimbap filled with rice, carrots, and pickled radish. Then, it’s dipped in a special mustard-soy sauce. It’s that sauce that makes it so addictive!

Interestingly, the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has recommended that vendors stop using the word “mayak” in food names. Consequently, Gwangjang Market no longer labels it as “Mayak Kimbap” in Korean, but the English name remains, making it easy for visitors to find!
Mayak Corn
The original Mayak Corn comes from the city of Daegu, but these days, it’s hard to find—it’s no longer as trendy as it once was. That said, its unforgettable flavor lives on!

The grilled corn is coated in a sweet, mayo-based sauce and butter, and then generously topped with cheese powder. The result? A perfectly addictive blend of sweet, salty, and savory flavors that Koreans absolutely love. It’s no wonder it earned the nickname “mayak”—you just can’t stop eating it!

Korean Egg Toast: 3 Must-Try Styles
In Korea, eggs are a key part of everyday meals—like egg rice (gyeran bap) and egg soup (gyeran-guk). So naturally, eggs are also a must in sandwiches and toast. Here are 3 must-try Korean egg toasts that are especially popular in Korea.

Korean Street Toast (Gilgeori Toast)
You might have seen this Korean street toast in Seoul. This is one of the most famous Korean toasts. People call it Gilgeori Toast (길거리 토스트), which means “street toast.”

- Recipe: How to make Korean street toast? Super easy! Korean street toast ingredients are super simple! Lightly toast thin slices of white bread in a pan with melted margarine. Mix egg with shredded cabbage and cook it in the shape of the bread. Stack the bread with ham, cheese, and the cooked egg mixture. Then, drizzle with ketchup. Here’s the secret: Sprinkle sugar on top of the ketchup before closing the sandwich. The result is the iconic Korean sweet-and-savory egg toast that everyone remembers from childhood. This is the traditional Korean toast.
Korean Egg Sandwich (Egg Drop Style)
The Korean egg sandwich has gone global. This style became popular thanks to the Korean toast chain Egg Drop, and now, even here in Belgium, where I am now, you can find Korean-style toast shops popping up!

- Recipe: Use buttery brioche (or a soft white bread if brioche is hard to find). Fill it with scrambled eggs, cheese, and bacon. The key flavor comes from two sauces: a sweet mayo-based sauce and sriracha mayo. It’s fluffy, rich, and super satisfying.
Egg Mayo Sandwich
A soft, thin slice of bread filled with creamy egg mayo salad—this sandwich is simple, smooth, and irresistibly comforting.
- Recipe: Mash boiled eggs and mix them with mayonnaise, salt, and pepper to create a creamy egg salad. Spread the mixture between two slices of soft white bread. This sandwich is beloved in Korea for its soft, savory, comforting flavor. It’s a protein-packed meal that’s perfect for breakfast or lunch.
