What Is the 54321 Grocery Method?

The 54321 grocery method makes shopping easy by assigning a specific number of items to each food category. No more stressing over lists or wandering the aisles. Just follow this one simple rule and your weekly balanced diet plan comes together effortlessly.

It was first popularized by content creator and chef Will Coleman on TikTok, and honestly, if you care about healthy living, you’re going to love it. The reason the 54321 grocery method works so well is simple: you naturally cover all five major food groups without counting calories or following a strict diet. That flexibility is exactly what makes clean eating habits stick long-term and personally, it’s part of how I lost 20kg and have kept it off ever since 😆.

Why the 54321 Grocery Method Works for Balanced Meal Planning

  • Variety of vegetables and proteins every day
  • Cover a wide range of amino acids, vitamins, and minerals effortlessly
  • Perfect for budget healthy eating. No more buying too much.

How to Build Your Healthy Grocery List with the 54321 Method

Here’s my method for building a healthy grocery list in just 10 minutes! 🫢

1. Check your fridge first

It helps you avoid buying things you already have and that’s how you save money.

2. Fill in your categories

Write down 5 vegetables, 4 fruits, 3 proteins, 2 grains, and 1 treat. And don’t feel guilty about the treat. It’s your joy.

3. Think in combos

Choose ingredients that work across multiple dishes. For example, napa cabbage can be used for cabbage stir fry, kimchi, or cabbage soup.

4. Shop seasonally

Seasonal produce is more nutritious, cheaper, and more delicious! It’s my personal tip for maintaining balance meals without overspending.

💬 My Weight Loss Tip

  • Low Carb: Personally, I try to avoid white noodles and glass noodles (dangmyeon). They’re high in carbs and spike my blood sugar pretty quickly.
  • My Choice for Carb: When I do eat short-grain rice, I keep the portion small and load up on more protein and vegetables instead. One thing I do love though? Pasta because it’s made from durum wheat, which is actually higher in protein, so I use it often to make fusion Korean dishes 😉
