What is Tornado Corn Dog?

This is a snack you’ll only find at Korean gas stops. In Korea, it’s called many names—Mayak Hot Dog, Tornado Hot Dog, or Spiral Hot Dog. Oh, and by the way, we don’t actually call it a “corn dog” in Korea. We call it a hot dog.

Unlike traditional Korean hot dogs, the tornado corn dog wraps the dough around the sausage in a spiral shape. This uses less batter, making it lighter while letting you enjoy the juicy sausage flavor even more. Today, I’ll show you how to make this at home with puff pastry that you can buy at any grocery store. Oil? Not needed. All you need is an oven or an air fryer.

No One Makes Corn Dog at Home

The Korea’s corn dog you know and love? No Korean ever makes it at home. Korean corn dog ingredients seem easy but the batter is tricky to prepare, and frying with that much oil at home is no easy task. Plus, in Korea, you can find Myungrang Hot Dog franchises everywhere, and a corn dog usually costs only around 3,000 KRW (about $2 USD). So, there’s really no reason to make it yourself. Most people just buy frozen corn dogs and cook them in an air fryer. However, frozen ones are never as crispy or tasty as ones bought outside.

That’s where this recipe comes in. It’s a super easy Korean corn dogs recipe without batter—using just sandwich bread. This is the Korea’s corn dog recipe that hit 10 million views. Back when I was a kid, frozen corn dogs weren’t really a thing yet, and franchises didn’t exist, so my mom used to make them for me with bread. She didn’t coat them with anything, but I added panko to mine and deep-fried them. The result? Way crispier and tastier than anything you could buy. Honestly, it’s better than store-bought.

Difference from the Korea’s Corn Dog Recipe

A regular Korea’s corn dog uses a chewy batter made with glutinous rice flour. The batter is coated around the sausage and then deep-fried until crispy. On the other hand, the Tornado corn dog recipe uses puff pastry dough wrapped around the sausage in a spiral shape. You’ll often see this at Korean gas stops, where they deep-fry it for sale. But at home, you can simply bake it in an air fryer or oven. It’s also easier since you don’t need skewers, and because no batter is required, you can make a delicious corn dog in just 10 minutes.

Air Fry Korean Corn Dog

Since this Korean style corn dogs are made with puff pastry, there’s no need to deep-fry them. You can bake them in the oven or air fryer, and they still turn out crispy and delicious. This way, you can enjoy them much more healthily than regular corn dogs—without losing any flavor.

Sauces

At Korean gas stops, you’ll always find sauces available for corn dogs—usually ketchup and mustard. Most people enjoy Tornado Corn Dogs with just ketchup, or a mix of both ketchup and mustard.

Perfect Pairings with Korean Hot Dog

In Korea, people enjoy corn dogs as a side dish with other foods. One of the most popular pairings is tteokbokki. Dipping the corn dog into the spicy rice cake sauce is a classic street food combination.

What makes the Tornado Corn Dog special is that it’s a snack found at Korean gas stops. At these stops, you’ll find not only corn dogs and tteokbokki but also a variety of other unique snacks. If you’re not a fan of tteokbokki, you can try pairing your corn dog with other gas stop favorites, such as hot bar (fried fish cake on a stick) or so-tteok (skewers of sausage and rice cakes).
